David is a bad dad. A couple of weeks ago McKaiden brought home a little story he wrote for school. He was very proud of it and showed me. I read it and every page was "bad kitty", "stupid kitty", "dead kitty", it was very very derogatory. Even had a line about "I'd kill the kitty, but I really wouldn't". All about a kitty who was bad and the girl who was mad at him. In short I was horrified. It seemed mean and crass - nothing like what McKaiden is like. So I told him I was very disappointed and did not like the story. He was very sad. I explained to him why and he said he would make the next one different. Fast forward a couple of weeks. I come down the stairs today and notice a new book sitting on the dining room table. It's a book McKaiden bought at the book fair. It's called, "Bad Kitty". With a picture of a black cat almost identical to the one he was drawing in his story. I flip through it and guess what - it's a story about a girl and her very bad kitty, and trying to get him to take a bath. The story is almost identical to McKaiden's. Turns out - he was not making up a "bad" or "mean" story, he was copying a story he thought was funny. McKaiden came down the stairs minutes later and I asked him if this was what he was writing about and he said yes. Ahhh - I felt about an inch tall and honestly still feel horrible about it - HORRIBLE. Now, I'm not wildly impressed with the author of this book and I may question whether it's an appropriate story, but that aside, it's a popular series and he liked it, wrote a story himself and got a crushing response from his dad. Well the title of this one caught my eye. I would love to see McKaiden's story! He's recovered from the initial "critique" of his story, right? ;-)
